Dunton Hot Springs, Colorado: what dreams are made of (via)

Yesterday I decided to do a little tie-dying. I’ve had this Tumblr tote since last spring and I always wanted to dye it, but I could never find the right stuff. Growing up in Oregon, we always had Rit Dye available in the supermarket. So when I was in Chicago, I thought it would be as easy as stopping in to a drug store to pick up some dye. Nope. No store I checked had it.

Then I moved to DC and had the same trouble finding materials. Not shocking. I don’t think anyone in the District would ever be caught dead in tie-dye. Anyhow, same story in London. I walked into a store and asked for Rit Dye and the man behind the counter looked at me like I was an alien. And then I realized that Oregon is hilarious and crazy and of course it’s one of the only places where tie-dye stuff is available at the corner drug store.

When I broke out the dyes, it brought back lots of memories. I think it’s, like, required for school-aged children in Oregon to tie-dye something at least once a year.  I set up a little station on the front porch, which was warm and sunny because Oregon in January is like everywhere else in April. I dipped the tote bag in the bright colors and like magic, it transformed. I was just as blown away by it as I was as a kid. And look how cool it turned out!
